Vera Amiano’s Garden & The Grove Weed Warriors Invite Community Participation
Bourbonnais, IL – The Village of Bourbonnais is pleased to announce the return of two community-driven initiatives in celebration of Earth Day: Vera Amiano’s Garden at Jordan Park – 59 Jordan Dr. - and the Weed Warriors volunteer program at The Grove – 700 Main St. NW. These programs continue to serve as opportunities for residents to connect, contribute and take pride in Bourbonnais’ shared spaces.
Now entering its third season, Vera Amiano’s Garden offers six-foot-by-four-foot plots available to village residents for $10 each on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications are available online at villageofbourbonnais.com and in person at the Administration Office, 600 Main Street NW. The planting season runs from May 1 through November 1.
Named in honor of former Bourbonnais Trustee Vera Amiano, who served the community for 20 years (1997–2017), the garden stands as a living tribute to her legacy of service. Following her passing in February 2023, her impact continues through the Vera C. Amiano Outstanding Community Service Award and Scholarship Fund, administered by the Community Foundation of Kankakee River Valley.
In addition, the village is excited to continue its Weed Warriors program at The Grove, now in its second season. This volunteer initiative invites community members to assist with light park upkeep, including picking up litter, clearing leaves and pulling weeds—all while enjoying Bourbonnais’ central gathering space.
The Weed Warriors program is designed as a community engagement effort, complementing the ongoing maintenance performed by the village’s Public Works Department. Their dedicated team continues to provide essential, routine care across all village properties, including The Grove, ensuring these spaces remain clean, safe and welcoming for all. The volunteer program offers residents an additional, hands-on way to take part in caring for and connecting with their community.
