Coordination of planning activities, implementation of the comprehensive plan, and consideration of variances, special use permits, and planned unit developments are handled through the Bourbonnais Planning Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals.
Members of the Planning Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals are appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the Board of Trustees. Members are appointed for overlapping five-year terms.
The Bourbonnais Planning Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals conducts public hearing on all applications for rezoning, special use permits, planned unit developments, zoning variations, ordinance amendments, and requests for annexations, as specified in the Illinois Complied State Statutes.
The Planning Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals also reviews and acts on subdivision applications.
The Bourbonnais Planning Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at the Bourbonnais Village Hall, 700 Main Street NW, Bourbonnais, at 7:30 p.m. Information concerning meeting agendas can be obtained by contacting the Bourbonnais Building Department at 815.937.3575. Updated in 2013, the Bourbonnais Comprehensive Land Use Plan establishes a dynamic vision for the future of Bourbonnais. Taking into consideration current growth trends, transportation improvements, and natural features within the Bourbonnais area, the 2013 Comprehensive Land Use Plan suggests a pattern of single-family residential, commercial and industrial land uses to compliment existing development patterns.

In concert with the Subdivision Ordinance and Development Standards, the Zoning Map is viewed as a tool of the Village to ensure the full implementation of the Comprehensive Plan. The Bourbonnais Zoning Map suggests specific land use applications for any property in the Village, centered around 10 specific land use categories. These would include provisions for residential, commercial, manufacturing and public land uses.
